Our review of North Hayne Farm Cottages

ACCOMMODATION AND PRICES

North Hayne Farm comprises eight self-catering holiday cottages sleeping between two and ten people. Like many farm complexes the cottages – arranged around a courtyard setting – have been sensitively converted from original farm buildings and retain attractive character features including exposed beams. Outside, each cottage has its own private patio area with BBQ and garden furniture. Prices are reasonable, with a week in two bedroom Tom Kitten or Peter Rabbit costing £1270 or £1180 respectively at peak school holiday season. The largest and newest property, Jeremy Fisher, sleeps up to 10 (plus 2/3 cots) in five bedrooms, for a cost of around £2640 at the same time of year. Out of season a family of four could stay at North Hayne Farm for approximately £500.

CHILD FRIENDLY HOLIDAY FEATURES

A key draw for families considering a holiday at North Hayne Farm is the wide range of farm-themed and wholesome family friendly activities on offer. Children can get hands-on with the workings of the farm and help feed and care for a variety of animals including spring lambs, alpacas, ducks, hens, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. There’s also the added fun of a free donkey ride each morning and – perhaps for the more adventurous children or parents! – the pet goats love being taken for a walk. The owners of North Hayne Farm also run seasonal activity workshops throughout the year. The complex benefits from a well-equipped games room with pool table, table tennis table, darts board, card table and settee, and there are various books, videos and games which can be borrowed. Parents of younger children will be pleased to know there is a separate play barn specifically for under 7s featuring sit and ride toys, tunnels, play houses, train and road sets. Outside, the cottages have large gardens and sit within a ten acre site so there’s plenty of space for children to run around and let off steam; there’s also an outdoor play area with swings, sand pit, slides, climbing frames and play house.

PARENT FRIENDLY HOLIDAY FEATURES

There’s lots at North Hayne Farm to help ensure mum and dad have a relaxing break too. Each cottage comes with its own private hot tub so you can unwind in style at the end of a busy day sightseeing, or you can take advantage of the qualified babysitting service while you enjoy a few drinks or meal at one of the area’s many popular pubs and restaurants. Holistic therapy treatments are also available on request.  The owners of the farm have recently introduced their own ‘Farm Hands Club’ for over 6s and a Free Rangers (forest school) club for all ages, which run during the school holidays for a nominal charge – perfect for giving parents a bit of well-earned time off while the children enjoy having outdoor fun under safe supervision.

To help parents travel lighter the cottages come with all the baby and toddler equipment you might need during your stay including cots, high chairs, bed guards, booster seats, step-up stools, listening monitors and stairgates, and if you’re organised enough to order your weekly shop in advance then the owners helpfully provide a complimentary grocery unpacking service. There’s free WiFi in all the cottages, but note that pets are unfortunately not allowed on site. Always a popular touch with the Parent Friendly Stays team, you’ll find a Devonshire cream tea and fresh flowers waiting for you on your arrival.

IN SUMMARY…

We know from experience that the Parent Friendly Stays children simply love the chance to help feed, stroke and care for animals, not to mention the excitement which would be caused by the offer of a daily donkey ride. If your children are the same then we can’t think of a better place to visit than North Hayne Farm – and there’s plenty to keep parents happy there too.
